Juicing Lifestyle - Day 189 - Update

Does the “food” you eat make you tired a few minutes after you eat it?
Do you down coffee/caffeine like there is no tomorrow?
Do you think maybe that your caffeine addiction could be trying to make up for a bad diet?

Here’s an idea: Maybe it’s the ”food” you eat. 

This is day 189 of my Juicing Lifestyle. I am down 8 inches (46in to a 38in waist) and I have lost 50.4 lbs (286.8 lbs down to 236.4 lbs). I continue to lose inches even though the scale only reads a 50 lb loss (which it also said on day 101). I continue to feel great and my energy level has never been higher. I was only hungry for the first 13 days and a lot of that was detox from caffeine and processed food. I don’t want to use the word diet anymore because that implies something that is temporary.

My Process:

I make juice once and week. It costs me $27/week (or $1.29 per meal) for all of my juice “meals.” I store my juice in nine 28oz Blender Bottles that are air tight. I drink one 28oz bottle of juice a day (via 8-10 small servings per day) and I am never hungry. I don’t always feel “full” but I am never hungry. There is a huge difference between being hungry and your stomach feeling empty. You will start to see vegetables and fruit as very desirable and inviting. And eventually just the smell of processed food will begin to make gag. Now you will still have what I call “mental cravings” for food you know you shouldn’t eat. For me that is pizza and Doritos. But not being hungry makes overcoming those cravings that much easier. I also try to schedule what I call “Fat For A Day” or #FFAD where you can eat what you like, but only for that day. Because if you keep eating that way you will be Fat For A Week or worse a Year. Really plan and look forward to these days, but realize that you will feel different, especially your energy level. Another thing to note when you are transitioning between solid food back on to juice you may have a 10-14 hour “blue day” where you will feel very down and a little depressed this has happened multiple times to me if I was on solid food for a few days for a holiday as an example it will pass after a single day.

Also remember that if you cheat for one day that does not mean that you should give up. Remember this is a Lifestyle not a Diet.

My Recipes:

Orange Elixir

4 - whole apples
4-5 – large carrots
1 – medium lemon (with peeling on)
2 – cups raw spinach
optional:
½ avacado or 1 banana

Green Juice

6 leaves Kale
2 cups Spinach
1 Cucumber
4 Celery stalks
1 Lemon
2 Apples
optional:
Ginger root

I am starting my Juicing Diet for 60 days starting on August 8, 2012. I am combining this diet with my 2-3 session walking exercises that I am already doing. No processed junk foods, white flours, sugar/desserts, fried food, fast food, processed meats, alcohol, or caffeine.

Honestly I have never been “excited” for a diet in my life, (who in their right mind would be) but this time it is going to be different.

I had pizza with a buddy of mine before I started. And as I was eating the pizza I could actually feel my energy level going down after the 3rd bite. Wow.

August 6, 2012 — 2 Days before launch:

Prepping by not drinking coffee or caffeine (not that hard for me) eating fruit and veggies. Drinking lots of water. I am having a really constant caffeine withdrawal headache (which is common). I am also “muting” various food brands in my Facebook News Feed —not really sure how much help that will be.

Device vs Ecosystem Innovation

I was initially very excited for the Microsoft Surface. But once I came down to reality I realized price and apps are going to be crucial to its success. I did however notice a very different strategy from Microsoft. Microsoft has been making various computing peripherals over the years mice, keyboards etc. But this announcement was different. To me Microsoft decided they needed to radically change how they communicated with their hardware partners. They put their money where their mouth is and they developed their own Surface prototype. And based on the presentation given, in my mind this product was designed to shake their partners awake from their design “daze” as it were in order to show them how they want the hardware to perform as opposed to just telling them nicely. I also noticed while using Windows 8 consumer preview that Windows is becoming the operating system that I always wanted. I have envisioned for a long time a computer that would synchronize all my settings and files when I logged into that machine regardless of machine or machine form factor. And this is where I see the road dividing once again between Microsoft and Apple. Apple has wonderful industrial design, but I have never felt comfortable using a Mac OSX. Seeing the feature set of iOS 6 and the iOS evolution has shown me that Apple’s innovation perspective revolves around hardware. And they are great at it. But I have always believed that non-technical people really don’t care what device they are using, but in fact just want to get work done or play a game or write a paper. As technologists it is easy to fall in love with a piece of hardware. But normal people usually don’t intrinsically love technology — rather they see it as a tool that allows them to be productive or to have fun. I realized that Microsoft’s strategy isn’t to make the device you are using invisible which Apple is so great at but rather Microsoft is attempting to make all computing devices: phones, tablets, desktops, laptops disappear. They are saying: regardless of the device you are using or where you are using it — the stuff you need to be productive in life is right at your fingertips. 


Microsoft is trying to make an entire ecosystem of computing devices disappear so you never have to compromise something based on the device you are using. 


Microsoft’s strategy has the potential to be much more valuable than Apple’s device-based approach. Their task is in no way easy — price and app availability will be key factors in the success or failure of the Surface. I have no doubt the battle will be fun to watch.
